When Sylvia Plath's mother, Aurelia, published the letters the poet had written from England to those at home, I wrote Mrs. Plath a commisserating letter; she responded with a postcard. She must have known I needed another keepsake for my keepsake box. (Reminder: You can click on picture and make it larger.)
Now that's pretty cool. How generous of her to take the time to send you a postcard.
ReplyDeleteYes, and I love her penpersonship. I had such empathy for Mrs. Plath -- her having had such a different picture of her daughter than that which was revealed in the latter's journals
ReplyDeleteHi George~ I'm so glad you mentioned this.
ReplyDeleteI've been thinking a lot lately about the predicament that Aurelia found herself, all of it coloured by the blackness of grief. To rise up and try to undo the damage done by The Bell Jar and under the stress of having her ex-son-in-law be in charge of everything she did must have been so difficult.
How lovely that you reached out to her and then, likewise. What a treasure!
cheers,
Laurie
